Intro
Skopje offers grandiose, at times preposterous, architecture, Stobi the sublime ruins of basilicas and palaces. Demir Kapija boasts fine wines, diverse birdlife and idyllic mountain scenery and Ohrid is a classically beautiful stone town boasting hundreds of churches on the banks of a vast lake.
National parks such as Mavrovo, Yassen, Galicica and Pelister offer hiking, fishing, scuba-diving, horse-riding, kayaking and mountain biking. Cavers will be enthralled by Vrelo, the world's deepest underwater cave, and Peshna, a virtually unexplored cave system.
Baskerfest in June brings acrobats, magicians, mimes, jugglers, clowns, musicians and puppeteers to the streets of Skopje, and Strumica carnival is like a "Macedonian Mardi Gras" with music, dance and colourful masks, held at the start of Orthodox lent, usually in February or March.
